Our Technology

Cell Culture Compatible
OBI coined the term “Cell Culture Compatible” to describe a transdermal delivery system that allows an active ingredient—or a finished formulation—to be applied directly to human cell cultures of keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts.
These delivery systems have very low cytotoxicity and particle sizes small enough to penetrate the skin and be utilized by cells. Our bio-emulsifiers and selective enzyme-release ingredients are key to this function. These systems mimic the body’s natural chylomicrons to deliver nutrients efficiently. They provide a cost-effective method for optimizing ingredients and formulations, maximizing cellular proliferation while minimizing irritation.
HyperVitamin Therapy Delivery
By attaching Omega 36 lipid arms to vitamins or bioactive molecules, we create pro-vitamins or prodrugs that enhance skin absorption, minimize irritation, and allow high concentrations of vitamins to be delivered safely through a Bio-Ester system.
SERT: Selective Enzyme Release Technology®
SERT provides low-irritation delivery by using naturally occurring skin enzymes to break down specially designed molecules, releasing their active components safely. Biosurfactants such as sucrose esters, polyglyceryl lactylates, phosphatidic acids, and ascorbyl laurate serve as low-toxicity alternatives to conventional surfactants and break down into basic food components—fats, sugars, amino acids, or vitamins.
Bioactives such as ascorbic acid, tocopherol, gallic acid, lactic acid, or oligopeptides can be attached to fatty acids or glycerides to create stable, deliverable pro-bioactives. Properly designed, these molecules form bio-emulsifiers or Omega 36 Bioesters that self-assemble and improve transdermal delivery, especially when particle size is below 600 nanometers.
OBI’s guiding principle is simple: “If you can eat it, you don’t have to detoxify it.” Food-based ingredients bypass liver detoxification pathways, reducing potential toxicity and making formulations safer and more effective.
BioEmulsifiers / Omega 36 Bioesters
OBI was founded on developing highly effective, low-irritation delivery systems for topical bioactives, particularly proliferatives. By minimizing or eliminating conventional surfactants, we use bio-emulsifier/Omega 36 Bioester blends for emulsions or BioEsters alone as anhydrous dermatological bases. This approach enables precise control over penetration rates, producing topicals that are both highly bioactive and gentle on the skin.
Our innovation extends to certified NOP organic emulsifiers and “edible bio-emulsifiers,” which create cell-compatible emulsions, liposomes, and nanoemulsions. These systems are bioactive on their own, with extremely low toxicity, allowing higher loading of active ingredients than conventional surfactant systems.
By combining these delivery technologies with in vitro Cell Culture Compatible screening, formulations can be optimized before costly clinical trials. Nanoemulsions and microemulsions are further refined using conventional biosurfactants (fatty acids, sugars, amino acids) and ultra-high-pressure processing. OBI offers world-class processing technology, validated ingredient purity, and proprietary or patent-pending ingredients available exclusively through us—setting a new standard in safe, effective, and innovative skincare delivery.
Variable Dosage Pulsed Titration
Pulsed Titration is a treatment method where high-strength bioactive products are used for a few days, followed by a rest period with only a moisturizer. This “pulse” approach stimulates skin proliferation and differentiation without the irritation caused by continuous high-dosage use, effectively functioning as a gentle at-home “micro-peel.” Epidermal differentiation is essential for building healthy, thick skin and a strong stratum corneum, while supporting proper formation of all epidermal layers. Titration allows ingredient strengths to be adjusted based on skin condition, age, or preference.
The regimen uses a dual-container system: one side contains water-soluble ingredients, and the other contains oil-soluble ingredients. This eliminates the need for conventional surfactants, which can irritate skin and destabilize high-concentration emulsions. Combined with HyperVitamin Therapy and non-nano sunscreens, Pulsed Titration™ delivers maximum bioactivity safely through stable, low-irritation formulations suitable for sensitive or photodamaged skin.
Delivering Bioactive Ingredients
Aqueous Based
OBI’s innovative aqueous gel systems are engineered to deliver potent bioactive peptides and lipopeptides with exceptional skin compatibility. Using natural lipopeptide biosurfactants—without additional surfactants—these gels encapsulate magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, retinols, and tocopherols in suspended microspheres for enhanced stability and performance. Lower irritation allows higher delivery of active ingredients, proven effective through human cell culture testing and validated by clinical trials.
Standard Emulsions
OBI has developed a series of oil-in-water emulsions designed to support wound healing and tissue recovery, enhance moisturization, and provide photoprotective benefits. These formulations feature minimal free surfactant content to reduce irritation and improve biocompatibility. A range of viscosities and advanced delivery modalities—including nano-emulsions and suspended microspheres—enable precise control over rheology, texture, and release kinetics.
Nano-Emulsions
These oil-in-water systems, with particle sizes in the 100–200 nm range, accelerate the delivery of lipophilic bioactive compounds through their high surface-area-to-volume ratio. They are often incorporated into aqueous gels or standard emulsions to enhance solubilization and improve penetration of hydrophobic actives.
Bio-Emulsions
Structurally similar to nanoemulsions, these systems use exclusively natural emulsifiers such as lecithin and fatty acids. They integrate seamlessly into high-performance or certified organic formulations, depending on the lipophilic bioactive agents included.
Anhydrous
OBI specializes in the development of surfactant-free delivery technology. Hydrophobic triglyceride bases serve as carriers for bioactive agents dissolved in transdermal delivery enhancers such as certified organic oleic acid. This approach delivers very low irritation potential while allowing high concentrations of bioactive agents with controlled, rapid delivery.
